New Training: Configure VXLAN
In this 4-video skill, CBT Nuggets trainer Jeff Kish walks through a lab scenario for configuring VXLAN and EVPN! The walkthrough includes setting up the lab environment, configuring VXLAN via flood-and-learn, and then layering EVPN on top at the control plane. Watch this new Cisco training.

What is 'Flood And Learn' Used For with a VXLAN
VXLAN is an interesting network design that improves over the traditional VLAN design. For instance, VXLAN removes the 12-byte limitation that the traditional VLAN enforces. This allows network engineers to create more VLANs in a network which is all but a requirement for larger networks and cloud networks.
The VXLAN communicates over the top of layer 3 in the OSI networking model with a 'spine and leaf' configuration. In this way, each leaf can connect to multiple spines but different spines can't connect to each other. The VXLAN uses something called 'flood and learn' to find the various interconnects in the system so each leaf can communicate with each other.
'Flood and learn' is a technique for the VXLAN to discover L2 addressing. It is dependent on multicast to discover the BUM (broadcast unknowns multicast) to learn about adjacent L2 addresses in the VXLAN fabric, though. It's a common method for configuring VXLAN networks.
