When Can Container Technology Provide Benefit Over Virtual Machines?
Over the past decade, virtualization has completely reimagined the landscape of the modern IT environment. Through virtualization, physical servers can be segmented such that multiple operating systems or virtual machines can run on one physical server. This revolutionary process greatly enhanced the utilization of physical resources, since no longer organizations had to dedicate one physical server per device or application.
Container technology aims to provide the next revolution in computing by abstracting away the parameters of the operating system, and allowing for applications to all draw on container compute resources. By simply removing the parameters of the operating system, organizations can greatly reduce the overhead of operating system resources, or over provisioning of virtual machines. In doing so, applications can now all draw on a common pool of resources, using only what they require in a dynamic, optimized fashion.
