How Can IDS and IPS Enhance the Security of Wireless Networks?
An IDS or Intrusion Detection System and IPS Intrusion Protection System are both network-based appliances that help mitigate the risk of a cyber-attack conducted via an organization’s internal network. An IDS is designed to monitor tens of thousands of packets as they traverse an organization's network with the intention to detect and flag malicious packets that could be part of a malicious attack. These IDS solutions are simply designed to monitor and alert other network-based components of a potential threat rather than actually remove the potentially dangerous packets from the network.
Alternatively, an IPS is designed to monitor and remove suspicious data packets from the network. This difference allows IDS and IPS appliances to work in a symbiotic manner such that an IDS and monitor and flag suspicious data packets moving within a network, and an IPS can remove the potentially malicious data packet before it causes harm.
