Working with Relational Data on Azure FAQs: Cost, Training, Value

What does it mean to work with relational data?

When you're working with relational data, it means you're working with data that's stored in tables that have strict, defined relationships to one another. When you're working with relational data, you're querying, managing or using data that is pulled out or retrieved from a relational database management system (RDBMS) like SQL Server or Azure SQL Database. Specific tasks can include designing schemas, writing SQL queries, or optimizing database performance.

How is data organized in a relational data model?

When data is organized in a relational data model, it means the data is organized into tables that have rows and columns (think of a spreadsheet). The rows in a relational data model (left-right) are individual records and the columns (top-bottom) are the attributes of the record that you're defining. Relational data models contrast with non-relational models that organize data in more flexible ways and are suited to scalability or unstructured data.

What Azure services can you use to work with structured data in a relational database?

The Azure cloud has many data management and analysis tools and services, which are usually provided at a premium. Azure SQL Database is a fully managed relational database service that's based on SQL Server. Azure Database for PostgreSQL and Azure Database for MySQL offer managed databases tailored to databases of those variants. There's also Azure Synapse Analytics, which has access to especially powerful analytics capabilities for large volumes of structured data.

Who should take this Azure data course?

This is first and foremost a skills-based data management course with an emphasis on technical application. That means it's ideal for database administrators, data engineers, software developers, and anyone else who manages, queries or analyzes structured data. But it's not purely for IT professionals – non-technical managers and administrators can improve their jobs and reduce stress related to data by learning to use the data management and analysis tools on Azure.

Is this relational data on Azure course associated with any certifications?

No, this is a skills course, not a certification preparation course, so it's not directly associated with any Microsoft or Azure certifications. However, Microsoft has many different credentials related to data analysis in the cloud that this course could help you work toward. The Azure Enterprise Data Analyst Associate is related to managing enterprise-scale data solutions, and the Power BI Data Analyst Associate is somewhat more focused and specialized.
